I am looking to suppress restarts for patches; however still want to have popup notification appear to users until they reboot their machines.  I've configured it in the wizard and the package has the following switches:  /n /z:w /s /c:99 /p /t:30 /m:"Patch Authorization.xml".  This installs the patch silently with no reboot but there is no popup notification.   Any thoughts on how to do this?  thanks.

Have you tried taking off the /n switch?

Did you supress notification within the program itself?

yes as a matter of fact I was looking at the package this morning and I had suppressed the user notification.  I now have the unattended installation unchecked and have checked "notify users about update activity" and checked "users can postpone indefinitely".  I'll see what results that gives me and let you know.  thanks.

Can you send me your latest command-line for the program?

These are the commands I have now:  PatchInstall.exe  /n /s /c:99 /p /t:30 /m:"PatchAuthorize.xml"

I put the /n back in as a suggestion from our Microsoft TAM, the /n enables the persistant popup. this popup allows users to install or postpone the patch installs.  I'm still trying to figure out which switch if any prompts a reboot after installing the patches?

This should help....

Usage: PatchInstall /g:xxx /z:s|w|sw /f /c:xx /t:xx /d /p /q  /l:xxx /n[:xxx] /x

/g:xxx -- Grace Period, specified in hours

/z:s|w|sw -- Suppress Reboot, On s=Server, w=Workstation, sw=Both

/f -- Force Reboot

/c:xx -- Countdown Period, specified in minutes

/t:xx -- Failsafe Timeout, specified in minutes

/d -- Calculate grace period by time detected instead of time authorized

/p -- Default to postpone install until grace period expiry

/q -- Run in quiet(windowless) mode

/l:xxx -- Change window duration, xxx duration time in minutes

/n[:xxx] -- Notify user of the software updates through persistent icon, xxx is reminder time in minutes

/x -- Generate authorization list XML for all the patches on this machine

/m:"<filename>" -- Authorization file name to be used. This file name should be specified in quotes

I have the same request.

It seems that /n switch shows up an icon on the client's system tray after patch installing. The problem is when you right click on the icon, you just get 'Display Reminder' and nothing else. I guess we should get a notification message behind 'Display reminder' to reminder user to reboot the machine, right?

Thanks for any advise.

Kevin

I'm supposed to be meeting with our Microsoft technical rep sometime in the next couple weeks to discuss.  Hopefully, I will bring back more info on this topic.

FYI.  I spoke to our Microsoft TAM and there is no way this can be done using straight SMS 2003 functionality.  In order to do this we would need to create a separate VB script to create the popup.
