Currently the Canadian primary server is in Atlanta.. about 30 secondary sites up there. I am going to be moving that primary up to Canada so that all of the secondaries do not have to go across the border wan.

I have never done this.. Can i simply move it,, change its up,, and change its local boundary? Or is there a lot more work involved. All of our client boundaries are AD site based.

As long as you don't change the name of the server, it's IP address is not relevant.  Changing the boundary is just as if you weren't going to move it at all; you're just changing the boundary settings to match whatever your plan is.  Just be sure not to have overlapping boundaries.  For example I suspect 1 of those Secondaries has the ADSite boundary now, which you want to switch to the primary?  It's up to you & your network infrastructure; but you could even have no boundaries set on the Primary after you move it.  Otherwise, remove the ADsite from the Secondary, and add it to the Primary.

Hmm... thinking about this... I think I would remove the boundary while the Primary is still in Atlanta, (and add it elsewhere if you need to); and let that cook for an hour or so to let everything sync up.  Then change the nic to DHCP or a static IP you are 99% sure will work once it's in CA; then shut it down.  Try really hard to get that hardware up to ca really quickly; the longer it's offline, the longer it'll take to catch up on all the records the Secondaries want to send to it. And if I think if it's offline too long, there could be issues.  I've never had a primary offline for more than 2 days (that was a "fun" 2 days), so I don't have personal experience with how long is too long. Or you "could" simply stop SMS services on the Secondaries while the Primary is en route, then start them up after the Primary is in place--although I've never done that for more than a few hours; and that was under SMS 2.0 when I was doing a hardware lease return.

I figured that right before it is being shipped.. i could go to one of the other atlanta primaries... and put the boundaries in for all of the CA secondaries until the primary arrives up in CA.

Currently none of our primaries have boundaries for clients,, we make the secondaries do that. We have approx 20 secondaries up in CA.. all communicating back to Atlanta via 3 T1's. When patch day comes.. we have an english and a french patch package, 720 megs each... So because the primary is on this side of the Border pipe... over 22 gigs of data go across that pipe which kills our northern network.. thats why i am doing this.. gunna also break the patches up into smaller packages..

gotta love taking over what other ppl left.

and when i do this, i wont have to really do anything with their secondary sites?

Here is my plan
Remove the boundaries from the sms secondaries in CA
Add those boundaries to our East server in Atl
Wait and make sure some clients pick it up
Ship the primary to CA
Power it up, change the ip
Remove the boundaries from East in Atl
Readd them the the secondaries in CA
Done

Does this sound like a pretty stable plan?
thanks

How long will it take you to ship the server?

Sorry I missed this message. Anyway I would try to overnight it and not move the clients to another server. Moving clients to another server is asking for problems.

Plus why not make the trip yourself the weather up here is nice.    (no I’m not Alberta, I’m in Ontario.  )
