I just want to verify from the experts here that if a machine is a member of a collection that has some software packaged advertised to it... and the user uninstalls the application... will sms repush it?

Thanks,

Shadster

No, SMS will not repush the application package, if the same application is removed from the machine unless it is targeted to the machine again.

Nice, thank you sir... we are havign a couple specific users that need to uninstall the upgrade we just pushed to everybody, as it is mapped to an OU, it would have been a little ugly to exclude the machines from collection as opposed to just having them manually uninstalling it.

how does it know not to re-push to this client by the way?  is it a cached value?  or a cleared flag or something?

thanks again BTW.

There are regkeys (and WMI) entries that keep track of Packages & Programs advertised to a client, and if they've run successfully or not.  If it's a machine-based mandatory advertisement, usually deleting the regkey & a specific policy refresh will trigger a rerun of that advert.  Lots of right-click tools, scripts, or other front-end tools can help with triggering a reinstall on a per-client basis.  (by the way, if it's a user-targetted mandatory advertisement... it's harder.  Not completely impossible remotely... but harder)

Software distribution includes following methods:
Package
Program and
Advertisement on a specific schedule or sometimes ASAP.

when we target particular package to the target collection, it search for the machine objects in that collection and run the program specified in the package.
Once the package comes on the machine, MIF generates, program runs and the windows installer provides the status to the SMS and feeds the record in SMS database.
Unless, we distribute it again to the machine, it will store the previous status only.

One thing I would like to mention that the advertisement should not be recurring, otherwise, it will search again for the program status MIFs for the concerned application, and repush it.

Thanks for the interest.

we are not re-running the ad... but we havent disabled it.   I didnt' know what the best practice was...

so we roll out a package to a collection... and then once when it has pushed to everybody... should we have it expire, or diable it?  as all new machines going forward will have this version of software on the image.

I would recommend you to disable the advertisement.
Thanks.

It's up to you and how you manage apps, and possibly how you train your tech support staff.  At my old job, because of how our tech support was structured, even if the app was on the image we'd leave the advert available, but we would remove the Mandatory schedule.  This would allow the app to appear in "Run Advertised Programs", but would not be installed on a newly imaged box.  So if the local techs decided an uninstall/reinstall was the correct troubleshooting measure, they could easily reinstall it via RAP
