Hi,

I would like for SCCM Operating System Deployment to manually create computer names for me. Can I use the task sequence to generate computer names in the following standard:

COMPyyyXP

were yyy is a generic number

thanks/George

You can write script or a program to "generate computer names" for you.  This can be useful if you are trying to populate your database with "records" to conduct simulated load tests.  In other words, make your queries, reports and collections work against tens or hundreds of thousands of "records" rather than a few test machines.  However, this is not likely to benefit you in the OSD arena.

The only reason to add names for OSD purposes is to actually automate the installation process (e.g. PXE imaging) and make it as close to zero-touch as possible.  In this case, you need a computer name and MAC or GUID combination to be added to the collection that runs the imaging Task Sequence.  In this situation, it's not random.

Can you elaborate on why you want random names generated?  I am not seeing the end-state.

When using SCCM 2007 with OSD. I would like for OSD using PXE to create the following type of computer names for me:

1st computer to be installed will be called comp001xp
The next one will be comp002xp
comp003xp
...
...

Then I will be able to add them to my domain using task sequences and I will have original standard naming convention for my clients.

Hope this helps you understand what I am trying to accomplish

Unless you're using the Microsoft Deployment add-in to detect unknown computers then you have to pre-load the PC names into the SCCM console. Its not really that hard - you just need a .csv spreadsheet and you then enter whatever names you want and you will need the MAC address of the PCs - This is a bit of a pain but most vendors should be able to provide a list of the addresses when they supply a batch of PCs. So you could do some Excel macro to generate names - SCCM doesn't care

Once the machines are added to the console you can then PXE boot the Machines and apart from pressing F12 it it zero touch assuming that you have already advertised a task sequence to a collection and then added the PC(s) into that collection
