Migrating to Service Manager from another solution. Thursday, January 05, 2012 11:48 AM (permalink)

Just wondering if anyone has seen documentation on migrating to service manager from another solution (altiris in our case)?
I have a requirement to keep the existing tickets, for both historical purposes as well as referencing for repeat errors.
I have not been able to find much on migrations to Service Manager, anyone have links to share?

There is no built in way to do this, but it is possible.  Basically, decide what really needs to be brought over (hopefully just incidents).  Then, work with your database guys to basically map the data fields from the old product to the new product.  This extract/transform/load process would get you there.

I've heard of people doing it with BMC ITSM to SC Service Manager without much effort.  The guys said it took a 1 hour meeting with their DBA to figure out the mapping, and then they just exported the data, changed it to fit the new fields, and then uploaded it to their Serivce Manager database.

If you do get things mapped out, do put together a nice post to help other people looking to figure out the same thing.

    Good luck!

I dont know altiris but if it runs on a sql db or even better can be connected to using a sdk or powershell you can use orchestrator to facilitate the migration of the workitems you need to preserve.
Let me know if you want to look further into this, it might actually be fun for me to mess around with :-)

Yes its SQL backend, I'd love to use the SDK, more of figuring out how to pull from the API's that Altiris gives you.
API Documentation is never fun to read.

I did some reading up on the altiris cmdb and the easiest way seems to poke the sqldb and grap the stuff that falls out, i dont think the problem here is getting the information from one system to another, the issues begin if you need the 2 systems to integrate.
