can you run the 2007 and 2012 client on the same machine side by side? thinking of doing this during the migration phase

The typical migration path from SMS 2003 to ConfigMgr 2007 would be to upgrade the infrastructure first, which is capable of managing legacy clients. As far as I know, this has not changed.

No, SCCM 2007 is 32 bit and 2012 is 64-bit.  There is not upgrade path, it's build up another box and then migrate over type upgrade.

then why do they have a query showing "ConfigMgr clients not upgraded to Configuration Mananager 2012"?
does this mean SCCM 2007 clients can report into SCCM 2012?

If I am not mistaken, the reason has more to do with the migration functionality rather than the ability for SCCM 2012 to manage 2007 clients.  This query is invaluable because it lets you as the administrator know there are more 2007 clients that need to be upgraded before you cut loose of your migration settings and sunset your 2007 infrastructure.
