CMTrace in 2012 Sp1 Friday, January 25, 2013 11:43 AM (permalink)

I'm seeing a new strange behavior in CMtrace the last 2 days.  I'm installing a new SCCM 2012 sp1 server.  When opening a log file in CMTrace, the file opens, but it's 'empty'.  CMtrace acts like the file has nothing in it.  If I open the file in Notepad, the data is there.

There are some times when I open the file and CMtrace works great.  I haven't been able to figure out what's causing the behavior, and why it works sometimes.

Anyone else seen this?  it's weird.

From Mark Mears on the email list:

Open the same file with Notepad and see if the lines are prefixed with a tilde (~) character.  It cannot read those lines correctly for some reason.

That would make sense, but they are not showing a ~. For example, here's a line from my ?????wsyncmgr.log (pulled from Notepad): ??

Sync succeeded. Setting sync alert to canceled state on site ABC $$<SMS_WSUS_SYNC_MANAGER><01-25-2013 11:41:49.754+300><thread=5200 (0x1450)>

No ~.  But you have the right idea.  It's acting like it's got ~ on all the lines.

I thought I read somewhere there was a new CMTrace, or it was part of a download that was made for SP1.  Or I'm going crazy.

Well, That might be the case.  I did install from a freshly downloaded 2012 SP1 ISO.  But it's still a bit weird that it's not working right.  It's a fairly well established app.  ;)

I think there is a new one in the SP1 Toolkit, but I have seen the issue you're experiencing with the standard one from the SP1 setup files.

well, tried that.  Same problem.  Though the CMtrace in the toolkit is a newer date than the old one.  *Sigh*

All I can think of is you have some conflicting app.  You tried this remotely via UNC to a log file too?  That too fails?

Well, I'm trying to open log files on the server.  If I'm RDP'd into the server, I should be able to open the CMtrace and view the log file.  Sometimes it works with very small logs, but the larger ones (say a pkgxfermgr.log) 'open' but the view is completely blank.  Can I open the log file with another cmtrace remotely? yeah.  but it kind of defeats the point.

I recognize there's probably a conflict, but I can't seem to figure it out.  Nothing shows up in any event viewers.  Usually, if there is a conflict, it doesn't work at ALL.  But sometimes, for some reason it seems to decide that it's ok to view a log.  But its very very rare.

What I mean is use trace on your desktop to open \\server\d$\sccm\logs\stupidlogthatwontopen.log and see if it opens there.  My guess is it will and there is some other app on the site conflicting.  Or what about even logging into the server with a different username to prove it's not your profile.
FWIW, I rarely logon to my servers directly.  I just UNC what I can.

                        Brian,

Yes, it does seem limited to being on the server.  I can open the logs remotely with the same CMTrace file via URL.  But I can't figure out my conflict.

I'm a consultant and this is a client of mine.  As I'm using my own laptop to RDC into their systems, it's easier for me to just do it all remotely instead of UNC.  Hence my limitations. :)

                        Thanks!

Is it your profile? Or can nobody else open it on the server either?

not sure which value it was, but when I deleted the whole HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Trace32 key and relaunched cmtrace it started working again.

Deleting the registry entry worked for me also.   Thanks for sharing.
