New sccm server setup Thursday, February 07, 2013 7:21 AM (permalink)

I am currently running version 5.00.7711.0000, I am going to be installing a new server to replace this one, any comments on what version to go with?  This is the rtm and I see there are 2 cumulative updates, then sp1 beta and sp1, does anyone have any comments on sp1?  Other then capturing media I haven't had any issues with this version and I don't want to run into any block walls with sp1 if it isn't necessary.

Second part to the question, what's the best way to go about setting the new server up?  After all the prep work when I'm ready to do the sccm install, hows the best way to handle the new server taking over as the primary?

Thank you,
Sarah

I would install SP1.  We are running it in production and all is well.

I agree on SP1.  As for going to a new server, just restore using the SMSBackup from the old server.  Note that with CM12, you don't install CM and then restore, you do both at the same time by choosing a restore from backup files during setup.

Thank you,  I'm not real concerned about the backup, this one hasn't been in production very long and I'd rather not pull over the junk from testing.  Question is, setting up the new one, how do you setup a new one with the existing online?  I can get it up to the point of installing ccm but you can't install a primary with another primary already in existance, or can you?

        Thanks,
        Sarah

You 100% want to install sp1 as it gives you more functionality.

Yes you can install a new one while the other exists.  The only possible issue is if you set boundary groups for assignment against the same subnets.

so you can set up a new one, in the same domain as a primary?  I'd like to set the new one up and have it ready to go, I just need to find a way to gracefully have the original one stop managing our clients and have the new one start managing them. Any suggestions?  From what I recall, when you are installing it doesn't it see there is a primary in existance and forces the new one to be a child site?

              Thanks,
              Sarah

Yes you can setup a new one in the same domain.  Update the old one to SP1 and bring up the new one as SP1 and then you'll be able to use the migration node to in the console to do a CM12 to CM12 migration.
