SQL Error 17836 - Length specified in network packet payload... Friday, February 21, 2014 10:55 AM (permalink)

Just installed SCCM 2012 R2.

After setting up a secondary site, I am getting this SQL error:

Any thoughts on how to fix this? the client IP address is the secondary site server.

Thanks,
Bill

Oh. I uninstalled the secondary site and reinstalled a secondary site on another server. Events stopped until the new secondary site server was up and then the same thing. Had all green 100% check marks in the "Show Install Status". Just the IP address changes to the new secondary site server in the event log error.

Any suggestions, comments, queries, would be helpful. This fills the Application log on the Primary server with three per minute.

      Thanks,
      Bill

        Ok. Summary of events:

My Primary site's Database Replication status is stuck. Link State says Link is being configured with Description Initializing data between the parent site and the child site. It has been like this for two days.

I get Application log filling up with
        Log Name:      Application
        Source:        MSSQL$CM2012
        Date:          2/25/2014 4:13:30 PM
        Event ID:      17836
        Task Category: Logon
        Level:         Error

MS Product says this is normal and the issue will go away. How long is this supposed to take? Really?

On the Secondary site I have things like:
        rcmctrl.log says:

        The current site status: ReplicationMaintenance.
Site is NOT active, so not calling the DrsActivation procedures.

The Replication Link analyzer wants to reset queued messages and reinitialize replication groups, which I've done 20 times. Nothing changes.

If $300 can't fix the issue, what the heck?

How do I make the Secondary site Active and start replicating? This is the second server I have tried and get same results.

Distribution point doesn't work either on the SS, but I am not surprised as I suspect it is a symptom of the root cause, Length specified in network packet payload did not match number of bytes read; the connection has been closed...

        Thanks,
        Bill

If anyone just wants to reply to the thread and say Hi, that would be ok too. Replying to my own thread is starting to get boring.

            Question,

Does any one know the correct SQL SERVER port configuration for a primary and secondary site? What are the proper port settings for 1433 and 4022?

I can telnet from Primary to Secondary on both ports, but I can only telnet from Secondary to Primary on port 4022. Port 1433 does not appear to be open. I am thinking I did that when I changed all the open dynamic ports (closed them) and just opened 4022 on the Primary server to get the install to work correctly.

I can past links but here are the references.

So product support finally fixed my issue. We changed the SQL SSB port to 4025 on the primary site server site database properties and everything magically started working. Errors went away. Replication finished instantly. All is well.
