Beginner question Friday, June 27, 2014 10:44 AM (permalink)

Sorry for this in advance, but I am standing up SCCM 2012 R2 in a lab to do some testing and what not and have a question on importing boundaries and such.

Right now I have the product installed and running but the site while installed doesn't seem to be running. Meaning on the server itself if I try and assign the client to the site, it says it can't find it.  Now, I have disabled all discovery and what not for now, so I suspect that is part of the issue.

Do I need to enable Forest discovery (and the 2 options in there where it automatically discovers AD site boundaries and IP addresses)?

If I do that, will clients automatically start to deploy and if so how can I ensure that doesn't happen? Basically this is a lab environment so I only want to manually install clients and assign them manually. The last thing I need is to set this up and impact our production environment.

Thanks in advance for any guidance anyone can give my beginner steps.

The clients are going to try to find the server themselves.  By default, they will look to AD on how to find the server.  If your server is not publishing to AD, then they probably wont find it.  Here's a blog entry that talks about it a bit.  http://blogs.technet.com/...nager-2012-beta-2.aspx

Now, if you don't have anything published in AD, you can still TELL the clients what MP to connect to.   When you run the CM client installer, you need to tell it which Management point to connect to.  Use the SMSMP flag during install to tell it which server to connect to:  ccmsetup.exe smsmp=servername

But remember, you'll need to setup boundaries, etc for your clients to access any DP.s

Thanks for your reply. I am not publishing to AD (My account won't have rights and this is just a lab set up)

Since I am only using one server for everything, how would I define the boundaries? is it a requirement to be able to read a forest to do so?

      Thanks. Sorry for newbie questions

Since you are new, I'd suggest looking through Niall's excellent how-to series. This one talks about Boundaries and boundary groups.  If you follow this series from start to finish, it will help you get your test server up and running.
