SCCM and Dynamic Disks on Site Servers Tuesday, July 29, 2014 6:01 PM (permalink)
I've run into a situation where I need to extend one of the (non boot) drives on my Config Mgr 2012 SP1 CU1 Primary Site Server.  This drive contains my source files, and Config Mgr is installed on the drive.  I'm planning to convert the disk to a dynamic disk, then extend it to add space.  I haven't been able to find anything specific on known issues with this.  Is anyone aware of an issue with converting the disk and extending it on a site server?

There should be no effect on CM12.

The fact that a disk is dynamic has no real bearing on anything ConfigMgr wise. A dynamic disk is simply formatted and handled at a physical level in a slightly different way by the OS than a non-dynamic disk. ConfigMgr has no knowledge of this and so isn't affected by it; as long as it can access the files it needs, its happy.
If you plan on doing this on production server, make sure you have a good backup of everything (and tested process to restore -- this should go without saying) and then I would stop all ConfigMgr and SQL service on the system just as a nice layer protection and separation (assuming SQL is co-located which it should be).
