I have been trying to find out why I have so many machines that don' t have the SMS client installed when I noticed that a lot of the machines have the Client Directories and but when I look at the SMS Agent host it stopped and want restart.

Here is the CcmExec.log file I get when trying to start the SMS Agent host service.

This has been going on a for a while. Of course the standard answer nothing has changed that I' m aware of.

I discovered this by accident while I was trying to troubleshoot why I have over 600 machines that are assigned but not clients. While investigating I found that most of the system are old system still in AD some (That I recently deleted from AD but are still in SMS?) I also have some machines that are network but the client just installed installed then I found the systems that have the CCM directly but the SMS Agent host isn' t running

does a simple reinstall of the client fix things? or does it require the removal first?

You could whip up a logon script that checked for the service running..and if not...ccmclean /whatever

Or you could come up with a collection based on last inventory reported/heartbeat discovery received/etc...and simply push a repair to all those systems from the right click?

No I' ve tried simply pushing a re-install/repair and the SMS Agent host still wont start. I have to remove the client then reinstall seems to work.

I' m working on script that I would be able to run remotely. But would like to to know what is causing the systems to fail.

well..one good thing about it is that all the client logs should stop if that service is stopped...perhaps you can find the same " last event" on a few machines to come up with a theory?

I have an interesting situation that seems similar. I am not sure how many clients this is affecting so far, but I did notice that my workstation, (which was one of the first clients installed a couple months ago), was not running ccmexec.exe

After reading this thread, I checked the services running on my machine, and the SMS Agent Host was set to automatic, but was not running.

When I attempted to start the service, the following message dialog appeared on the screen. (See below quote and attached image.)

" The SMS Agent Host service on Local Computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service."

I also checked the ccmexec.log file on my local machine and there seems to be some problems, although not identical to that mentioned above. Any suggestions?

Where can we get a script for removing and installing clients?

I know this is an old post but I am experiencing this with some sccm SP2 xp clients and that link no longer works.

It seems a program has removed the wbem folder from the path variable on one machine however the same issue is occurring on another. :/
