I've never done that either. But just thinking as I type... If you want to take a slower, more cautious, but probably higher chance of success without wierdness route... Can you build up a temporary SQL 2000 instance on a server that you can update? Perhaps first move the database from SQL2k server #1 to Temp SQL2k Server #2. Once you have that working & tested for a while (hours vs. days of testing is your call), upgrade it from SQL 2k to SQL 2005, test again. Now that it's SQL 2005, move it to the final destination.
