hi all,

i've finally decided to play around with extending our sms_def.mof.

i was reading a great guide on myitforum called mof editing guide by michael schultz. it refers to the location of the sms_def.mof file on client machines to reside in: %windir%\ms\sms\clicomp\hinv\.

however this doesn't exist on any of my client machines. is this still the location for the sms_def.mof in sms2003 sp2? or do i actually need to make a modification to the default mof and push it out before it will appear on client machines?

daniel.

Hey Daniel,

Bit of a co-incidence I was just reading / learning up about this.

The SMS_Def.mof file is located your server under inboxes\clifiles.src\hinv.

As to making changes and pushing to clients it depends on what it is you are doing.

If you are just changing a reporting class to TRUE or visa versa then just make the change, save the file and the next time the clients run a hardware inventory they'll see the change and report accordingly.

If you are adding entirely new reporting classes then you'll need to re-compile the MOF file on each client using mofcomp.exe. Creating a batch file with "mofcomp.exe <siteserver>\clifiles.src\hinv\sms_def.mof" and advertising to all systems will do the trick. (confirm that location, I'm not near an SMS box at the moment to confirm).

If you  havn't already, check out Monster Mof. It is by far the most definitive source you'll need.

[EDIT] A trap that I just remembered, if you are going to keep a copy of the existing SMS_Def.mof dont just rename that file to .old etc. Cut and paste the contents elsewhere, then make changes direct to the original file. It's a compiled file with a version applied to it.

Cheers
Lincoln

There's a wiki started here:  http://www.myitforum.com/myitwiki/SCCMINV.ashx for inventory.  It's focused on configmgr; but still is another resource.
May I also suggest http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/skissinger/archive/2008/10/28/mini-monster-mof-builder.aspx, it's a collection of all the edits (I'm aware of) to date. It'll compile the edits for both sms2003 or configmgr.
