hi all,

we're looking at getting rid of wins in the new year and from what i can read sms 2003 in an ad environment can function correctly without wins.

i was considering going a step further and disabling netbios on all windows xp machines and servers. does sms 2003 sp2 require netbios to function correctly?

daniel.

You sure you want to go that stringent?  Lots of people can't because older apps hold them back.  So SMS is just one possible failure point to look at.  But yeah, if you fill out the FQDN stuff in all the site servers and roles, SMS will work with pure DNS.

as usual brian, i can rely on you :)

perhaps i am going too far trying to eliminate netbios. further research will have to be undertaken before we make a decision.

regarding the fqdn stuff, i thought by entering all that in your site systems it means they no longer need wins servers defined to use. netbios would realistically still be used? when i look at certain aspects of sms like reports refering to 'netbios name' and agent properties containing a value for netbiosname, then perhaps it would break sms.

do we know if sccm 2007 handles no netbios better?

Yeah, CM can handle it too.  But in both cases, I'd expect a phone call the day you shut if off from some guy saying his app isn't working anymore.  And probably some app you never even knew existed.  "Oh ya, we've been using that for years!"  I'd probably slowly test it first.
