Chicago Systems Management User Group
After a (not so) short hiatus, the Chicago Systems Management User Group (SMUG) has returned. Due to a recent increase in interest for a management-based user group in the Chicago area, SMUG has been resurrected and is now back on track for a quarterly meeting schedule. The first meeting will be held Wednesday, August 16th at 5:00 PM in the Chicago Microsoft Office.

The focus of this return meeting will be a Microsoft management state of the union. There were some great announcements that came out of the Microsoft Management Summit this year in San Diego and a whole lot of activity in the management space for Microsoft over the past year.

SMS 2003 Service Pack 2 was released, offering FQDN support, AD security group discovery, folders for Software Updates, client record deletion propagation, multithreaded software inventory, and various hotfixes. SMS 2003 R2 was also released, providing the Inventory Tool for Custom Updates (ITCU) and the Scan Tool for Vulnerability Assessment (STVA). Microsoft furthered its branding of the System Center moniker by announcing System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (previously SMSv4) and System Center Operations Manager 2007 (previously MOMv3).

SCCM Beta 1 is now publicly available and offers many new features including Network Access Protection (NAP), drag and drop, major changes in OS deployment and Desired Configuration Monitoring. SCOM 2007 Beta 2 is also available, providing end to end service monitoring, increased Microsoft knowledge built into the management packs, self tuning thresholds, simpler reporting, and Audit Collection Services for consolidating security events.

Microsoft is helping organizations prepare for migrations to Windows Vista with a beta update to the OS Deployment Feature Pack, and a beta version of the Business Desktop Deployment 2007 solution.
