Define desired configuration models and enable SMS 2003 to proactively monitor configuration settings for compliance. Administrators can create and edit XML models through an authoring GUI to define desired configuration values and check for configuration compliance such as registry settings, files, software updates, and service packs.

SMS 2003 SP1 uses the Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU) to determine the update compliance of managed systems. This tool provides integration with updates offered by Windows Update and Microsoft Update. The tool shares the same security update, update rollup, and service pack data as offered by Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). This inventory tool can be used only within an SMS 2003 SP1 site hierarchy with certain hotfixes applied.

This guide assumes that you have already deployed SMS 2003 with Service Pack 1 and that you have SMS 2003 SP1 clients deployed and configured to use the Advertised Programs Client Agent and the Hardware Inventory Client Agent. It also assumes that you understand SMS software distribution.
