Release Dates
The release dates of the various SMS versions:
- SMS 1.0 (code name Hermes) – January 7, 1994
SMS 1.x anecdote: 1.1 and 1.2 were ACTUALLY just going to be service packs - and they got feature heavy enough to call real releases. So, they had no actual code names. What's interesting about these dates is that the 1.x product needed some serious work, hence, the reason why it was updated once a year.
- SMS 2.0 (code name Opal) – January 11, 1999
- SMS 2003 (code name Topaz, Emerald) – October 22, 2003
- System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (formerly SMS - code name Ruby, Diamond) - August 24, 2007.
More fun: SMS 3.0 - Emerald. This was planned during the 2.0 design cycle for all the post 2.0 features. There were features planned for Emerald that aren't in any systems mgmt product today. Specifically, replacing the Senders with true QoS - but that's not evolved in Windows enough to do as much as the Senders do today! Of course, as 2.0 ran into product quality, SMS 2003 ("topaz") became the alternative - which was reliable software dist, AD discovery, and mobile-aware deployment.

Back in 1995 I attended a class for
SMS 1.1, and I remember that when the instructor was doing the Remote Control demo he told the class, "Well this doesn't really work yet but it will be really great when it does. Hopefully they'll get it to work in the next version!"
