The next few pages are written to allow the administrator to easily identify how to use the MIF text file to transmit program status and inventory data back to the Systems Management Server database.

Generally, there are a few basic MIF files:
  • Program Status MIF - used to transmit success or failure back to SMS when a program finishes along with a 128 character description string (useful for troubleshooting failures)
  • NOIDMIF Inventory MIF - used to supplement the existing hardware inventory (which queries the Windows Management Interface (WMI) system for data)
  • IDMIF Inventory MIF - used to add inventory data for non-computer and non-user items (such as fixed assets, office locations, etc.)
