Even though you will be booting the test computer from a media created from the task sequence, you must advertise the task sequence to a collection containing that computer. This provides a safety check to prevent the task sequence from accidentally running on other machines.

Note that the machine must be recognized by ConfigMgr so it can be added to a collection. At a minimum this requires that an OS be installed so it could be found by whichever discovery you are running. If you are not using AD or Network discovery, you probably need to install the ConfigMgr client to get the machine available for inclusion in a collection.

The alternative is to create a new boot image that includes "Media hook files for unknown computer support" in the task sequence wizard. That allows a computer to be added to SCCM and a collection through a web service page as part of the task sequence boot process. See that portion of the Wiki entry for creating the task sequence for additional details. That still requires creating the collection and advertisement, as described below.

  • Create collection for reference build
  • Add machine reference build will be created on (if not using web service process)
  • Advertise task sequence to collection
    • Right click on task sequence, select Advertise
    • Advertise
    • Select collection
    • Check "Make this task sequence available to boot media and PXE" checkbox
    • Make available
    • set advertisement schedule
    • Schedule
    • Set distribution point options. Set to run from DP instead of Download on Demand to reduce the chance of hash errors.

  • If you want to install Software Updates to the reference image before it is captured:
    • Create a Software Updates deployment containing the desired updates
    • Advertise this deployment to the collection created above
    • See the Edit Tasks page for instructions on identifying the site server by editing the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr task
