Deployment Options: Maintenance Windows
When there is a maintenance window configured for the client computer, the software update installation will be initiated after the deadline at the first available maintenance window. For more information about maintenance windows, see
About Maintenance Windows
. For more information about planning for maintenance windows in software updates, see the "Planning for Maintenance Windows" section of
Planning for Software Updates Server Settings
.
If Maintenance Windows are specified, updates will only be applied during those windows unless the Deployment allows otherwise. If you want the updates to be deployed during a scheduled maintenance window, then you must make the advertised software updates an
assigned
deployment by providing a
deployment deadline
, instead of making it an
optional
deployment by not specifying a deadline. With that being said, you may expect maintenance windows in ConfigMgr to behave differently than what they actually do. This misconception is not because of any short-comings of ConfigMgr, but will probably be more so because of not knowing that when an assigned software update deployment (e.g. has a "deployment-deadline" set) becomes
mandatory
(e.g. "deployment-deadline" expires), the maintenance window will delay the start of the software update deployment on the target computer(s) in the collection,
until
the start of the next maintenance window.
If Maintenance Windows are specified, systems will only restart during those windows unless the Deployment specifies to allow restarts outside the maintenance windows
Maintenance windows are set in the properties of a collection
If a computer is a member of multiple collections that have maintenance windows, the results are cumulative - updates can be applied during any of the applicable maintenance windows
A program is not allowed to start running if its maximum runtime plus countdown cannot entirely fit into the maintenance window available at the time the program is ready to start running.
If the program starts running while a maintenance window is available and is running at the time the maintenance window ends, Configuration Manager stops monitoring the process but leaves it running.
One way to use maintenance windows to control update schedules for servers is to have a collection of servers that is referenced by the Deployment, with sub-collections that have the various appropriate maintenance windows
To work properly, this design requires setting a deadline that is already expired, so that updates are applied and systems rebooted at the beginning of the corresponding maintenance windows
Set options in collections by right clicking on the collection name in the right hand pane and selecting Modify Collection Settings
Set one or more maintenance window schedules in the Maintenance Windows tab
