WSUS Installation

  • See Planning for the Software Update Point Installation for additional details
  • All site servers require a Software Update Point to support update deployments
  • WSUS 3.0 can be installed on site servers or separate servers
  • If WSUS is installed on a separate server, the WSUS Administration Console must be installed on the corresponding site server
  • During the WSUS 3.0 installation, you can choose to use the default Web site used by Internet Information Services (IIS) or create a WSUS 3.0 Web site. It is recommended that a WSUS 3.0 Web site is created so that IIS hosts the WSUS 3.0 services in a dedicated Web site instead of sharing the same Web site used by the other Configuration Manager 2007 site systems or other applications. This is especially true when installing the software update point on the site server. When using a custom Web site for WSUS 3.0, the default port numbers are port 8530 for HTTP protocol and port 8531 for HTTPS protocol (Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL). These port settings will need to be specified when creating the active software update point for the site.
  • When installing WSUS, cancel out of the configuration wizard - establishing the SUP site service will set the requires configuration

Software Update Point Configuration

  • See Planning for the Software Update Point Settings for additional details
  • Synchronization is the downloading of update definition metadata into WSUS
  • Update deployment downloads the update executable files into package source folders; they are distributed to selected DPs from the source folders, much like applications
  • The Central Site Server SUP should normally be configured to synchronize updates with Microsoft Update through the Internet
  • All other site SUPs are normally configured to synchronize updates with an internal SUP
  • Updates can be deployed to all sites from the central site server or from individual sites
    • Roles can be mixed by creating Update Lists and downloading updates on the central site, then creating deployments on individual sites using those Update Lists
