SMSWusHandler Begins¶
Windows Update Error Codes - If none of the situations below fix your problem, and you have an error code in SMSWUSHANDLER.log, use this table to continue troubleshooting.
Problem: Error in SMSWUSHandler.log that states:
ScanPackage serviceID being used for this search is {d5f5abcd-c811-423d-9545-a16e635e6cf7}
ERROR: UpdateSearcher::Search() failed.
ERROR: Search() failed with hRes=0x80240032
0x80240032 is the hresult value for the operation.
Returning 50 as the exit code.
Solution: Install Windows SharePoint Services SP2 -

Solution: Check the
Automatic Updates Service - ensure it's configured to run as
Local SystemProblem: Error in SMSWUSHandler.log that states:
AddScanPackageService() failed.
ERROR: Search() failed with hRes=0x80040154
0x80004002 is the hresult value for the operation. Returning 16386 as the exit code.
Solution: Re-Register Windows Update and XML.

0x80070070 is the hresult value for the operation. Returning 112 as the exit code.
Solution: Disk Drive is full - clean disk, then re-scan.
Problem: Error in SMSWUSHandler.log that states:
AddScanPackageService() failed.
ERROR: Search() failed with hRes=0x800b0003
0x800b0003 is the hresult value for the operation. Returning 3 as the exit code.
Solution: Try deleting the package in the VPCache folder (e.g., C:\WINNT\system32\VPCache\HK30000A\). You may need to look deeper, into WindowsUpdate.log for more detail.
Problem: From SMSWUSHandler.log, you can see that the scan process hangs at
ScanPackage serviceID being used for this search is {dcf1039b-d796-43e4-9262-5cc7784900b2}
(this process should take less than five minutes) and you may find several processes for "SMSWusHandler.exe" on the system.
Solution: Modify DCOM settings. Start->Run,
dcomcnfg [enter] (instructions from here vary on OS version). Modify the
Local Access default security configuration. Grant the local
system account "Local Access".
Problem: Error in SMSWUSHandler.log that states:
ERROR: UpdateSearcher::Search() failed.
ERROR: Search() failed with hRes=0xc8000402
0xc8000402 is the hresult value for the operation. Returning 1026 as the exit code.
Solution: Run
FIXWSUS.CMDProblem: Error in SMSWUSHandler.log that states:
ERROR: UpdateSearcher::Search() failed.
ERROR: Search() failed with hRes=0x8007000e
0x8007000e is the hresult value for the operation. Returning 14 as the exit code.
Solution: Install the Windows Update Agent
Problem: Error in SMSWUSHandler.log that states:
